What's That Clicking Noise?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello All,

I'm new here to TB, although I've been lurking for some time.

I have a question regarding my Modulus FU4 which I just got in January. I've noticed that occasionally I'm getting a clicking sound coming from the bass. Kind of a stutter, but the sound isn't otherwise cutting out. I've tested if it's the cable or the amp as I'm playing my MIA P-bass and EBMM Stingray using the same cable and amp and not getting the clicking.

Wondering if this is normal or if it has something to do with the wiring on the Aguilar OBP-3. I haven't modded the bass in anyway, accept for hardware and pickguard, never touched the electronics. Any help would be appreciated as I thought I would ask here before contacting Modulus.

I'd assume lower string height and when you're playing your fingers on right hand are coming to rest on the next string which causes a clicking as that string hits the frets.

Or, it could be the strings hitting the pickup poles if you're an aggressive plucker.

Higher string height or a less aggressive plucking technique are the main solutions.

Thanks for the reply. I don't believe it's fret click, not an aggressive plucker and the string height is the same as when I got it. It also happens when I'm not playing or touching the strings at all.

The sound is definitely electronic, kind of reminds me of a series of static clicks (maybe 10+ consecutively, then stops) from the days when I had a mini Moog, like an oscillation with a very quick attack.

I would open up the cavity and look for any frayed wiring.

I'll take another look, might just be a bad connection.

To clarify on the clicking sound - upon further thought and making lunch today, I found that it reminds me of the electric spark ignition on a gas cooktop, but several in quick succession.

I'll post back after popping open the cavity and having a second look around. Will also check the PU connections as well.

Took another look at all the wiring, all is pristine and neat. No loose connections or frayed wires, PU wiring looks/feels solid.

Any other thoughts out there?

Just an update should anyone find themselves having a similar issue. Ever since I got the Markbass amp and sold the Roland Cube 100, I haven't heard the clicking noise. Hmmm... wonder if the Aguilar and Roland didn't get along.
