What's the difference? G&L question

Sign in to disble this ad
I got a Musicians Friend catalog recently, and I notice that the G&L L-2000 (and L-2500) have what are known as Magnetic Field humbuckers, whereas the L-2000 Tribute has G&L USA humbuckers. What's the difference between the two? Are the Magnetic Fields like Wal pickups, with each magnet individually wound? I've read here several times how close the G&L L-2000 sounds to a Wal, it's even been considered a "poor man's Wal".

The USA and Tribute models have exactly the same pickups in them. The descriptions you are reading are simply a bit confusing.

I believe both use the same pickups, G&L MFD humbucking pickups.

I've never played a Wal, but I've had many, many G&L's over the years, both USA and Tribute. The USA and Tribute have "sounded the same, as long as they were the same model." The hardware on the USA stuff is better, and I think the fit and finish is nicer as well.

If memory serves, MFD stands for Magnetic Field Design.

No difference in pickups, just inconsistencies in the descriptions.

I can't really tell by the catalog, according the the descriptions I get the impression they're two different kinds of humbucker. Maybe just a marketing gimmick?

I agree. Very underrated as well. Leo's final refinement of the electric bass.
