What's going on with my P-Bass? (Pics inside)

Last night I noticed that the volume knob stopped working correctly on my late '70s Fender Precision, and tonight I took off the pickguard to have a look. Here's the pics:

As you can see in pic 3, there's a broken solder joint which is most likely causing the problem with the volume knob. There are a few other things that cause concern that I'd like to get an opinion on.

1. In the third picture, at the 8 o'clock position of the left-most pot, there seems to be a solder joint that's not in use. Any ideas about that?

2. In the first picture there seems to be a copper-looking plate attached to the bottom of the pickups. Is that normal?

3. Picture two shows a piece of cut-out cardboard that was found under the pickups. (It can also be seen in pic one under the strings.) I'm thinking it's pretty ghetto, I should probably replace it with something like foam?

4. In pic three there's some foil on the pickguard under the pots. Is this something standard from the factory or was it added later as some sort of electronic shielding? Does it have something to do with the copper plate under the pickups?

Thanks in advance for any info anyone might have.

that black wire that's disconnected on your final pic is most likely the problem....looks like it connects to the case of the left-most pot in the picture. it's the ground from the jack, if I'm not mistaken.

you can tell because the white wire from the jack goes to the "wiper" (middle lug) on the volume pot.

the pickup plate is not a problem, it's a shield of sorts...nor is the cardboard, but yeah, foam would probably be less "McGiverish"....I don't really like the term "ghetto", sorry.

the previous owner did a little work in your bass...not the greatest job...but not the worst...

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm just going to take it to a pro and let them deal with it.
