Not sure about the Thunderbass, but my Rapture had a custom Bartolini BD soapbar, C-type humbucker. This is Bartolini's "deep" voiced pickup with the following description "bright, smooth humbucker strong lows and low mids". I would guess that your bass would be similar. Pedulla will probably tell you....

thanks 12bass, ive read and heard of all the desriptions of the pups sound and used my own ears and, hey, i love the sound, they are humbuckers , quiet and grunty and i guess they are both the same?, i was wondering if any techno-heads had any views on these custom jobbies.

From what I've gathered, the 66BD5C-T from my Rapture 5 isn't much different from a regular Bartolini humbucker except for the custom 66 mm coil length (72 mm is standard). Additionally, I believe the bridge pickups are wound hotter than the neck pickups.

Overall, I liked the smooth tone from the Rapture's original Bartolini humbucker, but prefer the clearer, more transparent sound of Q-Tuner BL-5 that's replaced it. I found the Bartolini a bit lacking in the upper mids and treble.

According to the Bass Player review, the Thunderbass has Bartolini BCKE pickups which are "BC5K - brighter humbucker - treble enhanced version of the BC5C". However, the 'E' would seem to designate a triple coil design, which sounds odd to me.

Bartolini used to make active pups called "E".....years ago!

I'm not sure, but I think the Soapbars inside the Pedulla T are active.... as always I may be wrong!

thanks heaps guys, bcke huh?, i agree with that review i use both pups on 70% of the gig (covers), neck pup only on deeper reggae/dub stuff and solo on the neck pup for 'burping' although i find a fender jazz has a slightly better burp, although the t bass has more roundness on that score, i love the sound of the t though its definatly quashed my g.a.s.

I have a Thunderbolt 6 and two Raptures (single HB 4 and J-J 5). The ThunderBolt's soapbars have a wire from the battery going directly to the pickups which leads me to believe that there's a preamp inside. Neither of the Raptures has such a wire so I think they're passive pickups. The ThunderBolt has a brighter, hifi sound while the Raptures have more of a warm, vintage vibe goin' on.

The Bartolini 66BD5C-T which came in my Rapture 5 is definitely passive.....

that makes quite a difference in tone between the two then, its a shame the descriptions of both the rapture and the thunderbass are of adjectives pertaining to tone colour and response rather than technical descriptions of how those sounds are derived electronically, but i suppose the luthier has to have some secrets so as to protect their property.
