Whats the tonal difference between EMG 40cs vs. 40-HZ?

To me, on the surface, they seem to have the same magnet structure. So what is it that makes them sound different, if at all?

Thanks

I had the HZ's in a Spector. I put in 40TW's (which are coil split CS's, if I'm not mistaken). I found a huge improvement. Better response across the spectrum and rather organic sounding for actives. HZ's are passive, CS's active.

The HZs are basically the CSs without the preamp. They sound different because of the lack of the preamp. In the active EMG the two coils are run in differential mode to the op amp. This is kind of like having them in parallel, only they are isolated from one another. The preamp also shapes the tone of the pickup.

This is strictly personal, but to me, EMG's are loud but toneless. Very cold, hi fi solid state sounding. So, it depends on what you want.
