Depends on what for. I think humbuckers are better for rock by miles and miles, but singles do it for me in jazz and mellower situations.

I voted singles for their punchy goodtimes, all but one of my basses are single coils. But, that one bass with humbuckers is a favorite, so, I guess we all need both.

I play mostly rock and alternative stuff, but my experience has been that if you have only one upper register instrument (guitar, keys, etc.), single coils will allow a little more bite and fill out the sound better. However, with two or more, I like to settle back and just thump, and I think humbuckers are better for that situation.

I like both. My Zon Sonus and my MIM Jazz are both single coils, but my Tobias Growler, Hamer Chapparal (now gone) and MM Stingray (also sold) are humbucker. All of those basses sound great, just different!
