When did EMG...?

When did EMG start using dettachable pickup wires?

I bought some back in 1997 and the pickup wire was molded into the pickup.

Fast forward to 2008, and the wire now plugs into the pickup.

How long ago was this change made?

It's been a few years at least, I don't remember exactly when.

I ask, because I want this set of pups, and I want to make sure it isn't the super old hardwired type.

If they actually are new, they are the quick connect type.

How do you know?

Well, I already have the solderless kit. I'd like to use it.

The solderless kit can always be modified to allow for a few solder points - it's not too bad.

Your best bet is to ask the seller to open the box and find out if it's the quick-connect version or not (surely you're not the only potential buyer wondering). Judging by the packaging, I'd venture a guess that it's not the solderless version, but it might require an email to EMG to verify that.

I had some from 06 with the quick disconnects. If you're buying just the pickups, you'll still have to solder the other end.

I realize that the older quick disconnect pickups still require soldering. Fortunately, EMG sells solderless kits separately. You can also opt to have the kit include split shaft pots. I need these type pots, because my build incorporates speed knobs.

In any event, the seller got back to me, and they are the ones with quick disconnects. Purchased!

The only problem with the quick disconnects is that they never fit through the routes for the wires. I always have to unsolder them, then stick the cable end through the routes like a normal pickup installation.

Because they moved to the quick connect system a few years ago :)

I've wired two basses with the new EMG solderless sets and had no problems with running the pickup wires through te bass, to the cavity. (shrugs)

Ya, they fit in the holes routed for wiring in my P Lyte quite easily.
