Where can I get a Stingray preamp? or something that sounds similar.

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been "GAS-ing" for a Stingray for some time now, but I don't have the $$$. Now I found a Precision bass body with a Humbucker at the bridge and decided to buy it from a reputable ebay store. My question is: where can I get the electronics from a Stingray? or something that sounds similar? is there a way to know who is the maker of that bridge pickup?

John East (J-Retro) has one

MM style BTB-01 which is designed to mimic the Pre EB MM style pre. All are fully wired, including jack and battery clip, which may be spliced into an existing battery box, as would be available, in most cases.

There are three versions, see below:

BTB MMSR 3 KNOB V/B/T USING 3 POTS & JACK
3 X single knob, like original.

* Single Knob - VOLUME

* Single Knob - Late 70s MM style TREBLE

* Single Knob - Late 70s MM style BASS

BTB MMSR 3 KNOB V/B/T/MSw USING 3 POTS & JACK
Allows inclusion of mid sweep along with original MM style bass and treble on 3 knob plate. When the mid boost/cut is centred, its effect is neutral and the EQ is purely late 70s MM style.

* Single Knob - VOLUME

* Stack Knob - Late 70s MM style BASS / TREBLE / Pull for BRIGHT

* Stack Knob - MID / MID FREQUENCY SWEEP (Mid Sweep 01)

BTB MMSR 3 KNOB V/B/T/MSw USING 4 POTS & JACK
This type includes original MM style Bass & Treble on single knobs, plus Mid Sweep stack.

* Single Knob - VOLUME

* Single Knob - Late 70s MM style TREBLE

* Single Knob - Late 70s MM style BASS

* Stack Knob - MID / MID FREQUENCY SWEEP (Mid Sweep 01)

(It's not on my website yet and Steve and I haven't got together on these units yet so he can sell them yet, but I have some in stock)

GBP price for chrome: £95.00 for bass/treble version and £125.00 for those which include the sweepable mids.

I don't have plates currently BTW.

Cheers

John

J-Retro preamps are a bit pricey around here. Has anyone tried the Seymour Duncan preamp? how easy is it to install?

Every once in a while there's a seller offering replicas of the MusicMan 2EQ preamp on eBay. Here's a link to a completed auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=160123170009

Seller is bth88 (http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZbth88QQhtZ-1) and isn't offering any at the moment.

I used the SD MM5 circuit in a fretless that i built. It had a 3 band EQ + slap switch on a push/pull on the volume knob. I liked it-the bass turned out like crap, but the preamp worked really well.

Even if you get the preamp that bass will never sound like a Stingray. The pickup is way too close to the bridge IMO.

+100 on the pickup placement....will make the pickup sound awefully trebly....

one way to "help" make is sound more beefy, however, is to wire the coils in series vs. the classic stingray parallel.

that pickup should have been placed much closer to the P-pickup...but where it is, you can still get some cool sounds from it, especially when blended with the P-pickup

+1 on the pickup location. It won't sound like a StingRay.

It would be better to get an OLP StingRay ($250 new?)and gradually upgrade from there. If you want a StingRay sound, don't put any money on that P-Bass.

huh? OLP?

what's wrong with that P-bass...it won't sound like a 'ray....for sure...but that doesn't mean it can't sound great...

Can anyone tell me the distance measurements from the bridge pickup and the bridge of their Stingray?

I'd be happy to, but my Stingray is with our stage crew right now. I'll planning to take the bass home tonight for a re-string so i can post measurements tomorrow... if no-one beats me to it that is

found this info in another thread:

"from the 12th fret to the pickup centerline":

60's Jazz, Neck: 10 7/8" Bridge: 14 1/2"

70's Jazz, Neck: 10 7/8" Bridge: 14 7/8"

Precision, 11"

Stingray, 13 1/8"

L2000, Neck: 11 3/8" Bridge: 14.175"

that puts the centreline of the MM 2.125" bridge side of the centreline of the P (in other words...pretty darn close to touching the back of the p-pickup). That pickup looks to be a good 1.25" - 1.5" bridge-side of the classic stingray location...

+1...my OLP sounds close to a "real" stingray and I haven't even upgraded the pickup yet.

I A/B/C'd a 'ray, SUB, and OLP a couple years back in a music shoppe in Perth....all 3 basses rapid fire through the same amp....the OLP IMO had a better sound than the SUB...

I thought that too.

"Better" is subjective, but you can't say the OLP's sound like a stingray! The active Subs sound quite like a Ray but don't feel quite right IMO.

yes, it is subjective, but I didn't say that the OLP sounded like a 'ray....but, I don't think the SUBs sound like 'rays, either (the one I tried was active).

And I agree with you about the feel of a SUB...painted neck = ICK!

While on the subject of Stingray preamps... What is the major tonal difference between the pre and post EB preamp tone? I've got a newish SR5 and it can sound very clacky and metallic. Does that boil down to pickups or preamp?

Sorry for the threadjacking...
