| FWIW:
As the Bongo post indicates, it depends on a myriad of variables other than those you’re addressing. In general the following is more predictable than not in the pups I‘ve had:
Below 7K: brighter/lower than average output
7-9K: average tone output
9k+: darker/higher output
What’s of more significance to me is the tone, low output can be compensated for elsewhere so it‘s not a factor.
In general I choose pups based on player input for lots of reasons. If the vast majority of guys like a given pup that’s an indication that it’s crosses a lot of boundaries (taste, gear, music genre, etc.) and that a number of them are in circulation. It’s also one of the reasons I post reviews on pups. I develop a list of pups of interest and when one comes up used at break even price I buy it. If it doesn’t suit my taste, down the road it goes.
In my experience, outside the construction of the pup itself, there are too many variables otherwise to pin down a pup so it’s a moot point even if you knew all the details of construction and had the capacity to interpret them accurately. It’s basically calculated trial and error at best and I personally don‘t know till I‘ve had it.
Have had lots of Fender pups but don’t think I’ve had the Originals. There is a review on those I’ve had and the DM Model J’s in Dimento’s J experiment in FAQ. In recall I preferred the Model J’s over most the Fender pups, they were a higher output pup than your stats/the guidelines above indicate and were in general a more beefy aggressive sounding pup than Fenders.
