Who makes a '51 Tele Bass style pickup for 5 string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did some searching, but I'm not coming up with anything.

I'm looking for a source for a '51 Tele Bass "single coil" style pick up............but for 5 string!

Does anyone make these? I've never seen one (at least that I can remember). I would like to use one in my next Crook Custom bass, now in the planning stages........

Help me out if you can!

I dont think they even had 5 string basses in 1951. I doubt if anyone will make them.

My advice, make your own! The technology and manufacturing quality was pretty low back then, so it shouldn't be too hard.

That's actually just a jazz pup........I was hoping to find something that looks like the original '51.........it's really just a "cosmetic" thing that I'm looking for here..........the bass will have the look and vibe of a '51, but I need a 5 string.

Yeah, I know it's weird, but that's what everyone said about my Telecaster bodied 5 string, and it's fantastic!

Surely this will give a better vintage tone:

As for cosmetic, rub the logo off with alcohol and scuff with sand paper...

Thanks for the suggestion, but that is also a jazz style pup. I'm looking for something with the traditional look, the kind of triangular base, etc........

How did so many days pass before Nordstrand got mentioned????

Myself and Chef are the two people I know of who have custom Nordie 5-string tele-P-style pickups. His is true single-coil, mine is stacked-coil humcanceling.

BTW - The bass above (same as Sting's) is the original P bass design. The Tele bass was not introduced till 1967 as a reissue of the original P and had an awful (sorry Tele bass fans) chrome humbucker up near the neck. Here's a pic of the Tele bass http://www.vintageguitars.org.uk/TelecasterBass.php

IIRC, the first 5-string SCPB pickup Carey made was for Chef's bass. We spent a significant number of e-mails getting the details just right

it was definitely a fun custom project from a couple years back, and a model (with a slightly different headstock) that will become a standard offering when my shop re-opens

all the best,

R
