I admit that I haven't tried the bass on a good bass stack yet (10 days in my possession), but that'll be happening tomorrow.
I use to hate 7ender. |

I am going to try replacing it with a SC pup soon for just that reason.

Are you thinking for the 55-94? On a J-bass I just run singles and deal with a little bit of hum, but on the 94 you'd be humming all the time since there is only one J pickup.
I'm back to the Lakland pups on mine and digging them. |

I cut the highs by about 50% and they still sound HUGE. They get a great slap sound without any EQ-ing. They're definitely not like a single coil; though, other musicians have commented on the "classic" sound of my bass.

For the 55-94 I would like to get a little more treble out of the neck PU, but it's not unworkable as is. I have to keep fairly fresh strings on there or dial in some of the trebly back PU.

Two different designs and concepts.

I don't know how to realistically compare them to 'single coils' in general (or how anyone else does, for that matter) since different single coils have different sounds, IME. But... haven't personally experienced a dearth of mids and am happy with how open and full they sound.

Two different designs and concepts. | Possibly, something that may be closer than any stacked or split pickup would be based on the Alembic design with a seperate coil (no magnets).

I wouldn't say it sounds just like a traditional single coil jazz bass pickup. I prefer it! I think most stacked designs would work the same way... perhaps I'm wrong? It seems like a very obvious requirement.
The Alembic dummy coil was not part of the pickup and was kept in a separate cavity, if I remember correctly. |

Get a great single coil for the neck pickup and either use a stock or custom dual coil (not quad or triple) MM pickup at the bridge. Then wire it up so you can switch between the two MM coils and the bridge coil of the MM + the neck pickup only, with a blend between the two. So its just J-bass or MM, no all-three sound. Seems like what you want most is a great J-bass sound out of the bass so you could even get a custom pickup made that is just a J pickup in an MM shell. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
