why do the pick-ups on my guitar have so much extra hoursing?

The pick ups on my guitar have heaps of extra coverrings and stuff, they are in raised plastic thingies and have a metal layer over the magnets, but the pick-ups on my bass are bare magnets with nothing over the top and a lot less around them.

It's not a difference between basses and guitars because i've seen guitars with nude pick-ups and basses with lots of housing round the pickups.

I think the guitar is passive, the bass takes batteries, but i think it is passive pick-ups with active EQ (what is the difference between passive pick-ups with active EQ and plain active pick-ups?)

The bass is an Ibanez SRX, the guitar is an Epiphone special II

The guitar pickups are humbuciers, and have two coils, side-by-side, and then they are in the metal cover.

The bass pickups are also humbuckers, but are mounted directly to the body.

The reason why the guitar pickups are mounted the way is just because it's always been done that way. Even the metal cover was because back then they were more worried about noise, but you see a lot of guitar humbuckers with no covers.

The guitar pickups use steel poles with a bar magnet, while the bass pickup either has rod magnets, or it might also have exposed steel poles and a ceramic magnet on the bottom.

They are just different designs.
