Why are my NJ4SV pickups so low in output?

Sign in to disble this ad
My Nordstrand NJ4SV's are very very very quiet. On my X2 wireless, they don't even light up 3 bars most of the time, but my Precision bass lights up near 4-5 lights most of the time. I've never been able to get good output from them at all.

anybody else having this problem?

Technical Details:
NJ4SV's wired to a Audere 2 Band Preamp.
NJ4SV's in passive had the exact same output.

have you tried other Jazzes or J pickups equipped basses with the X2, what kind of output do you have then?
Also the only J pickups that I personally that can rival P output levels are the Dimarzio J DP123 I have never used NJ4SV so it may be one of their characteristics....

Yes, I have a set of stock MIJ pickups that are seriously louder.

Thats only on low z mode. I dont want to alter that i have it dialed in for tone. It sounds more like an EQ curve when you do that. Boosted lows.

oh i didnt know it affected the dialed in tone, just thought it made it louder. i still think there's a problem with the preamp if its not any louder than just the pickups by themselves in a passive system, thats just counterintuitive.

I installed a set of NJ5F pickups in my MIM Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V and although they sounded great, they had the same problem; very low output.

When I contacted Carey Norstrand he told me that he wasn't familiar with that problem and told me that the Aguilar OBP preamps work well with his pickup and to consider trying one. I wasn't so crazy about the tone of the Fender preamp so I tried it. The output level was much better and so was my tone after I installed the OBP-2TK.

It seems as though his pickups don't match up very well with some on-board preamps that are out there.

I adjusted the height of the pickups and this seems to greatly have helped. Possibly this was (cough) user error.

Up. Way up. My foam had basically collapsed. They need to go further up, but to do this i need to order some new foam. There was at least a 6db change when I moved them up, and greater than 10db change if they got close enough to the strings to almost touch them.

When I installed a set of SV's in a bass, I don't recall a noticeable difference in output. Have you contacted Carey directly about the issues you're having? Carey offers excellent customer service.

They sound okay now, especially in Low Z mode with the Audere. It takes almost that much output to match my P-Bass.
