Why solder to pot cases?

I was looking at the shielding guide sticky and got to wondering this. If the pots can be wired just using the leads, why solder to the case at all? Is it because the case of the pot will act as its own shield?

As far as I can tell, soldering to the pot cases is just a cheepnis production technique.

You've got to ground the pot cases and shielding somehow, but there's no reason to do it right there on the pot. A ring terminal around it might be a better choice.
