Do you guys never look at the screen while typing? Or is your caps lock button stuck?

Anyway, I have yet to find "my" P-Bass pickup. I've got SD 1/4 pounders atm, but I don't like them, and I'm looking for some replacements.

Wow, an actual good reason!

On topic, I use a DiMarzio model P, using it in mostly rock, heavy rock, and metal. It gives a traditional P bass sound, i.e. woody hollow grind, nothing extended in the treble, nothing too low. Great output, quality, and tone.

Just a few months ago I installed one of the Fender Original '62 P pups into my '08 AmStd P. The pup that came in it was nice, and very much in the p bass family, but much to wide sounding, and a bit tame/underwhelming. The '62 pup is a bit more "lo-fi" sounding (not as wide), and yields a very low mid focused, punchy tone. Classic P bass tones. As for the type of music....... it's a P bass....... it works with everything. I'm extrememly happy with it!

A few weeks ago we did a gig, and our guitar player's wife played it. I got to sit out front and listen...... it was beautiful.

The thing I love about the classic P tone is the way it sits in the mix...... it fits perfectly into that open sonic space of the band. And it does it without stepping on anyone, or ploughing through the mix to be heard.

Another vote for dimarzio model p's. Nordstrand are great too but spendy. I love my delanos too but also expensive. try youtube for sound clips.

I get good results with the Seymour Duncan SPB-1 (vintage for P bass) in a couple of P-J basses.

I primarily play contemporary jazz, r&b, gospel, & some oldies/pop.

The "best" pup for PBass depends on your preferred music, your strings, your amp, your style...

I use Seymour Duncan SPB-3s ATM, and they are decent, but I think I'd prefer the SPB-2, as it is balanced more like the original pups, but hotter. On the other hand, I have found a good sound from them, so I may just stick with what I've got.

The point of the above is that no one component of your sound is insurmountable. Use what you have to find a sound you like, and you'll be happy.

Here is a picture of my bass.

I love it, it's a regular Fender USA P with regular pickups. But it sounds like most other Fender USA P bass guitars. When I play it the sound just become's boring to me.

Try some new strings maybe? Seems like every time time I put on new strings I re-remember how good my bass sounds. Hi-beams for me. Less boring sound without the soldering iron

I play mostly rock, and use Lace Aluma-Ps with flats. Lots of low end with a bit of midrange presence. I swapped out the 0.1uF tone cap for a .022uF which keeps some of those mids from being rolled off when I turn the tone knob. It's a sound I enjoy, but not really the "traditional" P-tone.

I use flats all the time, I put Fender flats on it this time. Where I was out thats all they had at the time , so I thought I would give them a try. They are not the worse strings I have ever used.

By the way do you like the pickguard are would you go back with the pickguard that came with it. IT is a aged white sort of a coffee tint to it.

then you most likely want a "vintage" P-bass pickup, as opposed to anything "hot" or otherwise unusual.

it's an american standard, with the through-body bridge?

great bass, but; the stock pickup is just OK, you can get better.

the duncan SPB-1 or the fender "original '62" are both classic-sounding improvements for not too much money; the next step up is vintage types from boutique makers like fralin or nordstrand. (i love the fralin in my '96 P, anything but boring.)

also, if you went from the stock 250k pots to 500ks, the bass would get brighter and livelier, sounding in the mix more like a P-bass as opposed to just sounding like "bass".

actually, a "boring" sound might mean it's time for a better amp.

Right now I am using a MarkBass Jeff Berlin combo, at church I use a old SWR 350 Pro Head on a old SWR 410. I like the 410, I hope soon to add a MarkBass 210 are 410 to my Jeff Berlin. I like 10s with a 15.
