Question Worth switching out stock ESP pickups?

Hey guys!

I had been looking into buying another bass, and looking at much higher end ones then usual. You know, those beasts that piss the wife off for you even thinking about them... Anyways, I thought that it might be cheaper, or maybe just better to do some switching of electronics on something I already have.

My LTD F-5E came with ESP SB-5 stock pickups, and an ESP pre-amp. I am wondering if its worth maybe investing in getting better pick-ups (say, some EMGs) and/or getting a better pre-amp.

I have no idea how to do the actual work myself, so I'd probably have to take it in somewhere, in case I accident blow something up (god knows I would manage it)

Thanks for any info, advise, and help in advance!
