Yamaha Attitude Special - DiMarzio p-up problem

Hi guys,
a few months ago i got a Yamaha Attitude Special, its a discontinued budget version of the Billy Sheehan signiture bass. Its got two pickups, a p-style and a EB-0 style neck humbucker, as so:

after a few weeks, I thought i'd upgrade the p-pickup, to a DiMarzio-as the higher priced model has. I'm aware of the Will Power series, but for about half the price I got this bladed DiMarzio pickup off ebay:

With both original pickups in, the bass functioned as it should, and in my experience sounded great with both pickups on.

Here's the problem:

now the new pick-up is in, it seems that if both pickups are active, then the E and ESPECIALLY the A strings seem quieter and sound thinner than the D and G strings, im thinking it could possibly be a phase issue, but i really know nothing about pickups, resistance or electronics.

Each pickup works fine on its own, but as the Tone control only functions on the neck humbucker, im finding the DiMarzio a little too harsh on its own.

Should I just replace the DiMarzio with the old pickup? Or if i upgraded the neck humbucker to, say, a DiMarzio Will Power would this possibly counteract the issues?

just on a side note, while putting in the DiMarzio, i noticed its wires were incredibly thin compared to the standard pick-up's, my mate who was helping me solder picked up on it and thought it was odd.

any suggestions or opinions are welcome
thanks

Theo

It's probably a phase issue as you figured - can you swap the wires on the E-A half of the DiMarzio and see if that fixes the problem, for starters?

what if you just rewire it and put the tone knob of the neck humbucker to the P-pups? is it possible?
