They do have magnets and according to the article the output is so low and sound so dry it takes an on board modeling preamp to sound decent. Hummmm...

Why start a second thread with the same misleading title?
Any inductive pickup will have to have magnets. That's the way the physics work. There are other technologies that don't utilize coils, such as piezo pressure transducers, optical pickups and microphones, but this pickup design does not fall into any of these categories. It's still an inductive pickup, they've just printed the coils instead of winding them with wire.
