Question AI Clarus and Mics

I recently tried experimenting using a mic ( sm57) straight into the XLR input of my Clarus 1 series III , all I get is a terrible hum ,even with the level and master on zero, and the mic sounds awful if I try turning up the volume. I checked the mic and lead through a PA and they are both fine. The 1/4 " jack input works fine . Any ideas ?:

I'm no expert, but if you're convinced your ruling-out of the mic and cord is valid, and if you're convinced you're using the amp right, then it's gotta be the amp, no?

The AI folks (AI guy?) were great when I had a problem with my Clarus.

AI customer service is top notch. Above and beyond, actually.

With a combo input jack like on the Series III, I guess it's possible the XLR portion has an issue even if the 1/4 portion works.

Yes, their customer service is second to none. I just saw Rick and Paul today at AI headquarters.

I'd start by giving them a call or sending them an email.
