amp for ub

wanted to get some feedback in regaurds to ub amplfication. i dont think ill be able to afford a acoustic image amp for my bass which seems to be one of the better ones out there. anyone using a gallien krueger or hartke amp? i would like to get something i could also run a bass guitar thru. also was curious if anyone runs their bass thru a pa system for gigs as opposed to having a amp.finally wanted to know if anyone has used a sadowsky preamp with thier upright bass. thanks.

You should check out the Classifieds here at Talkbass:

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f145/.

You might find a nice Series I or II amp or combo for not that much moo-la as people upgrade to the AI Series III stuff. There are some for sale right now as I type. The AI products (including the earlier versions) are great from everything I've read here. They seem to last many years and folks experience very few problems. And ...... if they do have problems, AI deals with that situation quickly. I just got a Coda Series III combo amp and it sounds great with my DB and has lots of real nice features . Good Luck. You will find an amp that's just right for you.

I think that generally the GK MB series and the 400rb make very good DB amps. Almost anything can be used with a preamp but generally you want the smallest speaker cabinet you can get away with.

If you're on a budget, check out the Eden Nemesis series for good value accurate sound. The 2 x 8 combo is very sweet if 120 watts is enough. I used a 210 combo for years - incredibly reliable little amp with accurate, extended lows (maybe a little too much low end for URB)

yes, that is what i was after. didnt realize there was a whole forum about the subject. found most of what i needed to know thru different threads. thanks to all the nice people that contributed. i originally posted this thread on the wrong forum and had it moved here, im fairly new to bass talk and have not found my way around till i was directed to the parent threads page, sorry. my question had 3 parts mainly because i wanted to know if any of the existing gear i had was going to work for a ub. i dont have my bass yet so im trying to prepare for gigs im currently doing on bass guitar. playing bluegrass music on a electric bass has worn thin, im waiting on a upton hawkes, but have a couple months before it gets here.

The question about the Sadowsky preamp was also raised here. Doesn't look like there were too many responses. But that doesn't mean it won't work. If you have the Sadowsky, go ahead and try it when your Upton Hawkes arrives. Congrats on that BTW.

If it's not too late to make suggestions on combos. I'd point you in the Ashdown direction. I got the ABM series and have been VERY happy with it for both URB and my fender jazz bass.

thanks, its not to late. i currently have a ampeg ba 115, dont really like it. it is way to muddy sounding even at low volumes.nothing against ampeg, i realize this is a entry level amp, i cant find a way to get a clean sound out of it. it has this voice filter thing on it that i hate. ill check the out the ashdowns. also looking into some of the eden nemesis combos.thanks

Since It's Not Too Late

bribass likes Yorkville amps for entry-level. [ I guess maybe the bass amps go by Traynor now. ] You might could send him a PM or email him to get more info, or ask him to chime in on this thread if you like.

Although I think maybe the reviews are somewhat mixed, some other folks have had lots of success with the GKs like you said, and the SWR gear too.

Like I mentioned earlier, check out this link if you haven't already, for starters. You want to find somethin' you'll be happy with, esp. with that Upton Hawkes.

Of course, I don't know what your budget will allow, but don't count the AI out. You might be able to find a used first gen AI Clarus in the $350-$400 range. Try Jeff Hale Music (MI) or Wittman-Spins (PA). They, and other AI dealers, regularly accept trade-ins from their customers toward newer series AI's. It's a great amp. And there are plenty of good quality, reasonable-priced cabs available with a single 10" speaker ("driver" in today's jargon?). No pre-amp needed if you go this way.

And, yes, if the room is too big or too noisy for your amp rig, ask to be patched into the PA. There's no shame in it.

thanks alot for the encouragement about the AI. i will keep my eyes open. my bass wont be to me until early may so i have some time to shop around. anyone know about the eden nemesis silver series 2x8 combo, or the nemesis 2x10? there is a 2x10 on evil bay,but its about 10 years old. my budget at this point is about $500. part of me knows my BG will probably go by the wayside when my upton arrives, but i also do some gigs with a louder blues band that is worried that i may go totally bluegrass on them so i would like to get something i could use for both bands. i could keep my apeg for this band but i hate my ampeg.
