Bassmaster Pro and an Eden setup

Hi all,

I do believe that this is my first time posting in this particular forum: I've been playing upright for a while, but haven't as of yet used a pickup for it. Well, I actually have a bit of extra money, and figured it's time. The thing is, I've got the money to get ahold of a pickup/pre for the upright, but not the money for a whole rig. Therefore, I wanted to adapt my current Eden BG rig to double-duty.

Here's the setup: Eden WT 400, Eden 210 xlt 8 ohm, Eden 112 xlt 8 ohm. I found in this thread some great info (and the mention of the xst possibly being a better choice for DB than the xlt...oh well), but I just wanted to confirm that what I'm thinking will work.

I wanted to use a Bassmaster Pro setup, and run its output into the WT 400, feeding into either both cabs (as I do with BG) or just the 210 if the 112 doesn't sound tight enough. Is this feasible? I just want to make sure I won't be doing anything to blow up the rig (don't laugh...I'm ignorant ), and that I will be getting a good signal. After that, it's up to me to practice, right?

I have a BassMax and a WT-400. The Eden does not have the best preamp ever for DB--it can be a little boomy and slow. I usually run it into an EA Wizzy or Bergantino HT-112 and end up cutting lows with the bass knob, and messing with the semi-parametric mids to cut woof and boost clarity. I've had satisfactory results setting the EQ/enhance flat on the Eden and using a Fishman Pro Platinum Bass EQ preamp into the front.

A fair amount of people seem to like the BassMax wing pickup but I've heard fewer good things about the Double Big Twin. I find the phase switch and high-pass (low-cut) filter on the Fishman to be very handy for fighting feedback. I personally would recommend starting with one pickup and a preamp with better control (it looks like the tone controls on the K&K are inside--not too convenient for on-the-fly tweaking)--the LR Baggs Para-Coustic DI and SansAmp ParaDriver or Acoustic Driver are also worthy of consideration.

If you get a preamp that puts out a line-level signal you can also run straight into one of the Aux in jacks on the back of the Eden; this will bypass all controls except for the Master Volume. The Aux signal will not be heard from the DI output but is present at the Headphone Out.

Those two cabs together will probably be overkill fo DB. I'm guessing the low-mid emphasis of the XLT could lead to a lot of rumble/feedback if you're not careful. If I were you I'd try using just the 112 for starters. Be sure to damp the afterlength of the strings (between bridge & tailpiece) with a piece of rubber, plastic, or leather, and try stuffing something like a piece of foam or towel between the tailpiece & top to minimize unwanted vibrations. I find the phase switch and high-pass (low-cut) filter on the Fishman to be very handy for fighting feedback.

Thanks Winston, I'll give it a shot. Just for clarification, you've used and had some success with the Fishman EQ between the KK box and the Eden?

Just as an update, I went with the Bassmaster through the WT 400, and it sounds fantastic (well, at least to my novice ears).

It'll definitely take some experimentation to get the EQ just right (between the Eden EQ and the KK box), but I'm thrilled to be getting some good sounds.
