I have a Walter Woods MI-225-8. 225 watts RMS/8 ohms resistive. I have a Realist pickup. Any cab recommendations out there? Thinking of trying the Euphonic Wizzy M-line 12. I've had trouble hearing myself for some time now. Not sure if the Realist is the right pickup for me or not. I need something that works in big or small rooms and won't get lost in a big band. |

I very much enjoyed the Bag End S-15D with the Woods amps I had. At 45 pounds and 18" on each side it's not the easiest cab to drag around, but if you hold one handle in each hand and hug it to your chest, the burden becomes much lighter.
The BE has a ported back, so it must be placed near a wall to really project low end, and suffers from the phenomenon known as "beaming," so the sound does not travel omnidirectionally. On the plus side the S-15 will be quite loud when you feed it 225 Walter watts, is close to indestructible, relatively inexpensive, and Bag End's customer service is very good.

Use the search function to search for any cab you are thinking of buying, and maybe provide some information about the type of music you play, your price range, location. I love my Crazy8, built by Mike Arnopol. I play mostly gypsy jazz and old country. It works for 75% of my gigs, unless I need to compete with a loud drummer. I'm interested in Greenboy's Fearless F112 and F115, and the Big E cabs Mike is building. I recently played through an Aguilar GS112 and liked it a lot, and there's a great deal on one in the classifieds, located in NYC. Search around and read what people say about different cabs and pickups. I'm using a Full Circle, and am very happy with it. I play in all kinds of settings, and it's been fine. Not the most rugged, but I like the sound a lot. |

The Thunderchild TC 112 weighs around 30 lbs. and sounds magnificent with either of them. You'll have to check the Talkbass DB Classifieds to purchase one used. I found that the Woods worked well with the Realist. If you're looking for clarity, the Realist has problems with that, when you have to push the volume to, "run with a 16 piece big band. I'd suggest trying someone's bass with a Full Circle, to see if it works better for you, in that particular situation. Mike Arnopol's Big E Cabinets are something else you should try to look at.

A 4-ohm version of the Wizzy M will get the most of the amp's available power, especially the low to medium power vintage WW models. The Wizzy M has significantly higher sensitivity than many other cabinets, which means higher SPL for a given amount of power.
If you like the sound of the Realist and you aren't having feedback problems, I would stay with that pickup. A good alternative is the Fishman Full Circle.
BTW it would be very helpful if you filled out your profile and let us know which speaker cabinet(s) you are using now.

It's a specially-designed SMALL 1X10 cab that he made for me with a 4 ohm 400 watt speaker. The cab weighs about 14.5 lbs, and sounds great for the jazz/bop gigs I play. I don't do pop or rock gigs...just good ole' Real Book charts. It gets REALLY loud, not honky, and I am very happy with it. I've had it almost a year now, and it looks like new with that crazy rhino covering on there. I even had a shoulder bag made for it from Studio Slips. Throw it on the shoulder with my EA Doubler, roll my bass out to the subway, and I'm golden!
