blending mic with pickup

I just bought a markbass LMII recently, because A> my friend had a cmd102p and i like the sound of that, quite a bit. B> there are the 1/4 AND XLR inputs. C> its good for upright AND electric which is important.

the question i should have been SURE about (although this doesnt render it useless by any means, for me) however, was whether or not you can use both inputs for blending a mic/pickup signals. i just assumed you could...but now im questioning..

i dont yet have a mic for my bass that i can test with, and i also traded my realist for a full circle recently and unfortunately need a new bridge cut because of my ebony adjusters. so i cant test the full circle either.

does anyone know the answer to this? will i be able to use both channels to blend them(using a mic into a bluetube into the XLR input on the amp, pickup into 1/4 input)?

if not, what are some of your favorite amps to blend the two signals?

ps. i am hoping if i get a DPA4099 (read most of that thread earlier while at work) then i wont need the full circle at all, however. but that presents another problem..the cab i use with the markbass needs to play well with the dpa4099..not sure what kind of cab/speaker(s) i should use.

From the look of it, I doubt you could do any effective blending with the LM II alone. There are several products on the market that could help, though. I have a couple of articles on blending a mic and pickup live on my website (on the "articles" page) that may be of interest. Good luck!

Well, I think you could plug in both the pickup and mic at the same time, but there doesn't appear to be any separate EQ or even gain control. That is to say it doesn't really have two input channels, but rather one channel with two inputs. If you have a decent preamp with EQ you could try running one or the other through that first, before running it into the Markbass.

For example you could run your pickup into a preamp, then into the 1/4 inch while you run a mic into the XLR. The problem is any EQ on the Markbass will still affect both inputs so if you (for example) have to roll off a lot of highs on the mic, you will lose them on the pickup too, and trying to make up for it by boosting the highs on the separate preamp might not give the sound you want.

thanks for the input michael, that is something i have forseen in part..i have an LR baggs para acoustic DI i used with my realist with decent results, paired with my friends markbass it was really nice sounding.

again i hope to be able to use only the mic, but its all a process to figure out what works and what doesnt for my musical situations.

Looking it over again, if you try the pickup into the LR Baggs preamp, you may want to then go into the effects return input rather than the main 1/4 input on the front. That way you will bypass the gain knob, unfortunately the effects loop is pre-eq, so your eq settings on the Markbass will still affect the pickup.
