| | | | Cheap preamp I'm in a jazz band. I usually play electric bass, but I want to play more upright with them. But, when i plug the bass straight from the pickup to the amp, it sounds like crap. Anyone know of a preamp that mostly works, and is really cheap? Like under 75$?
Thanks! |

If you must use the Crate amp, you should get an preamp with a higher input impedance. A highly regarded and inexpensive preamp on this forum is the Fdeck preamp. Check it out.
Hope this helps. |

| | | | I use the fdeck not only to buffer my DB, but to buffer my EB as well, and using the volume knob on the fdeck, trim the levels between the two so I don't have to be fiddling with a lot of knobs between songs when a changeover is indicated.

True, the input impedance of the fdeck is 10 Mohms which will tend to play (pun intended) nicer with most piezos. The important feature that the Boss lacks is a high-pass filter! I'd bet a barrel of cookies that the Boss is op-amp based. The fdeck has discrete circuitry. Mind you, I have nothing against the use of high-quality (relatively costly) op-amps for audio. I'd bet at least a half-barrel of cookies that the op-amps in the Boss are quite inexpensive.
The bottom line is that dukeorock is right on target. If we're talking about amplifying DB, the fdeck would be head and shoulders above the Boss.

My guess is the fdeck would be an improvement...sadly, I haven't had any great experiences with SWR for upright, but that doesn't mean your experience cant be a great one |

According to a Fishman engineer "the best thing we ever made---sadly we didn't sell much". I agree as far as the best thing Fishman made. 2 Fully parametric bands of eq (both full range), proper input impedance, phase switch. It doesn't have a high pass filter but you can use one band to do the same thing.
They're hard to find but do pop up.
Fdeck's HPF is an awesome tool. Gives you more usable volume. |

I use my Boss through an SWR 350 actually.
How much are the new fdeck preamps?
