No preamp needed for Bass Max into AI Contra. Don't jam it too hard under the wing, adjust the pressure with a sax reed, and try both sides of the bridge. In my setup, high and mid register are much better defined since I switched to the G side. I think it makes sense: how some move of the lighter G string gonna reach a PU that is squeezed under a heavier E string ? The original installation was done according the BG (AH!) instructions, and the Ab to D register on my E string was choked, which I was attributing to bass bar problems.
Conclusion: A) I feel better now and B) electronics cannot solve all acoustic issues

I am still interested in buying a Clevinger Natural Presence pickup. Mike Carr ( or anyone else who has one)- have you had a chance to try yours out on a gig yet? I would be very interested to see how it performs at stage volume.

No, not yet. Still in Dubai, U.A.E. playing nightly until early April. Currently using new Eminence Bass. Has nice pickup, slightly modified Realist. It sounds very good with the Eminence. Looking forward to trying my Double Bass on a gig with Clevinger Pickup once I get back, don't know if it may fit Eminence's bridge slot but shouldn't be nessasary, as the Eminence with it's stock pickup needs no improvment I.M.H.O.
