compressor for recording and live

Has anybody tried urb to mic to preamp to compressor to PA (or recorder)? I'm trying to enhance the low end and subdue the dominant A's and B's over two octaves. I'm using a ART TPS 11 preamp and DBX 266 XL compressor. Best luck so far is with a Sennheiser dynamic mic. Any suggestions on equipment and settings?

Thanks

When I was running a Fishman Pro Platinum I used little or no compression because I thought it wrecked my tone. I recently acquired an FMR RNC and that's whole different story. I got it mainly for studio but it occurred to me that it might help live as well. Plugged it into the rig at home last night and it really helped tame my lively open A and D. Haven't tried it on a gig yet.

In the FAQ linked in my sig, there are several good .pdf's to read about setting up a compressor for various purposes. My recommendation is a high threshold and a high ratio, so instead of compressing everything, it only caps off peaks that go above your usual amplitude from note-to-note.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the input and information. It helps to find musicians who've been there and done that.

I use a Fishman Platinum, too, and I love the eq. Too bad the compressor sucks. I added an EBS stompbox compressor, and it is terrific. I like it even better (on bass) than rack units like DBX, etc. The only one I really like more is the LA2A, but that is in a class of its own, and it is impractical as well as expensive.

Along with the RNC (Really Nice Compressor), FMR now has the RNLA (Really Nice Leveling Amp).

The RNLA is designed to act more like an La2a type compressor.

I've got an RNC next to compressors that cost THOUSANDS more, and it holds it's spot in the racks (recording studio, not bass rig).

I wouldn't hesitate to try out the RNLA for a bass rig as a 'waaaaaay better than a pedal' option.
