Do Epifani cabs really "do it all"?

Hi (just posted this in the EB forum too)

Do you guys have any experience with Epifani speakers? I have given up on searching for a cabinet that is equally good for EB and DB. I recently heard one of there 210s (the lighter one) on EB and the sound knocked me out. I had always heard they were good for DB, but are they good for EB as well? Right now I am still waiting to try one out. As a doubler, I have a head that does it all (EA iamp 800), but it sure would be nice to have a cabinet that does it all too. One rig for both basses? It seems like some sort of unattainable beautiful dream.................... One rig for everything? It's not possible, right? Any thoughts would be most helpful.

I think someone here has posted that the 2x10 doesn't sound all that great for DB. Do a search for it. I've also heard that the 1x12 is better than the 1x10. But for the light weight, small size, and big sound, I think the UL110 is hard to beat. There's probably better sounding, heavier, cabs out there. VL208?!?

I have an Epifani 110UL cab and it does a great job for both DB and slab.

You should also check out the EA NL210 cab if you want a really sweet sounding 2x10 cab. I have one for louder gigs and it doubles perfectly. I'm sure it would sound great with your EA head.

I had a T-212D and it wasn't cut out for double bass. Too uncontrolled in the low end...it wasn't predictable either.

Hey Joel,

I have an Epifani 1x12 and I absolutely love it. I tried a lot of cabinets and actually tried most of the Epifani models. The 10's were really great for EB, but for DB..the 12's just speak better (and sound great for EB as well). It sounds wonderful with both basses and actually can be EXTREMELY loud (although I still haul around a Peavey 4x10 for bigger gigs) I also love it because it weighs about 20 lbs. In my opinion, it's definately worth the money.

If you want to try mine out with your head, you're more than welcome. I hope things are going well for you.

The reason I have been asking about the Epifanis is because I found one at a GREAT price. I am not unhappy with my dual rigs, but if I could consolidate into one "super rig" I would probably freak out. Anyways, I will probably be trying the cabinet early next week. I will post back with details (aka pretend like you guys care)......

I have a UL-110 and I LOVE it. It's just great with the double bass--it's close to flat, but it seems to have a bit of a hump in the midrange, just a bit, that makes the double bass sound really full without being thumpy. It's articulate and hi-fi without sounding colds. I also use it with the slab, and there I loved it with a fender j-bass but with the dingwall five I use now it's a little too aggressive sounding for my tastes, maybe too assertive in the upper mids? But it's still a great cab and the size and portability are amazing.

+1 on the UL-110.

I've used one on about 8 gigs now, with both upright and electric bass and in very different musical and acoustical settings. It's performed wonderfully. Best cab I've ever owned for low- to moderate-volume upright gigs--gives that elusive combination of natural warm depth AND definition. Speaks well at very low volumes, too.

I don't like it quite as well for electric bass, but it's more than serviceable as long as you don't push it too hard or spend a whole lot of time below low E.

That much performance from a 20-lb box, with decent efficiency and at a reasonable price point--amazing. For gigging upright players or doublers, it's hard to beat, IMO.

'nother +1 on the UL-110.

sfmiller55's comments speak for me. And as much as I really dig my Bergantino 12's for both electric and upright, that damn silly little lite weight Epifani gets all the play now. It's tight, warm, vintage, clear..... what a cool cab.

UL-110 Too Popular?

So, have UL-110s come back into the stores anywhere? Everyone's talking about them but I can't find any on the shelves. Also are these subject to MAP pricing? I would love to find a deal on one of these new or used.

I almost bought a used Berg yesterday but it was too heavy for me to be able to handle in real world situations without risk of injury.

Thanks,
S

I got mine at Jive Sound in Alexandria VA, a very cool bass shop that deserves support. The owner, Jong, is a TB guy. He'll ship, and answers emails promptly.

Website is http://jivesound.com/home/

I have dealt with Jive Sound and can 2nd the recommendation. Unfortunately, if you check the current inventory list on their web site, as of Friday, 15 September 2006, they don't have a UL-110 in stock. They do have a UL-112 however.

There is a guy in Indiana who has at least one of the 1-10s (it sounds great). His store is called Pazera's Music.

So far the UL 210 is working out very well for me. I think it is the best all around cabinet (for me) that I have ever played through. I will probably get it. Any more feedback would be great.

I agree entirely. I studied with Scott about 2 years ago. Now that he has his shop-he let me come in and play through all this stuff that i can't afford. My next rig will be an Epifani Cab [probably UL110 but maybe the 1X12] w/an Acoustic Image head [not sure of focus or clarus]. Simply because when i tried out those rigs at his shop i was blown away. I'm also a doubler [as is Scott] so i wanted something that could handle both. The Epifani cabs do it with ease.

take it easy.

the UL112 is the best cab I've ever played...I want another, just to hear two of them at once, even though I don't think I'll ever really need it. I'm loud enough with one.

I'm cross-posting this from another thread

I guess I could search a "UL410, are they good" thread, but, I'll chime in here.

I'd picked up a UL410 (new) from Van Gelder in NJ. Everything I'd heard about them was cool. Lightweight with a nice mid-range. Now, I like low end alot. I usually cut out mids to hear the PHAT. But, I play fast stuff and over the past 20 years have never really found a rig that could articulate what I'm playing. In all fairness I just lived with it and didn't really search hard for MY SOUND.

Well, I finally brought the UL410 out of the bedroom for a rehearsal last night. The weight of the cab is sick light. When I first lifted the thing I did wonder, how the hell is this thing gonna keep up in a loud rock setting? Man........ talk about CUT! and Articulation. This cab (with my Sadowsky PJ and Ashdown ABM 500) frickin' smoked! 32nd notes, no problem. Everything could be heard. What a smart, punchy, vintage or modern sounding rig.

About a month ago I picked up a UL110 and had the same experience with my Jazz duet and trio gigs and Blues gigs with URB and electric. The 110 can cover all my small-medium gigs and for a big stage, the 410 will be perfect. After playing for 30 years I could never EVER use the word perfect when it came to my sound and what I hear in my head. Ashdown, Sadowsky, Epifani.... I'm done searching!

thanks for listening.

Congrats on finding your sound! I have had the UL-210 for about 1 week now and I love it! It sounds awesome for EB and DB. I hardly ever need a rig that big for DB, but when I do, this speaker sounds just as good or better than anything I have ever used. So I sold my "upright cab" and my "electric cab". For me, this cabinet really does it all. I feel like I found a rig that mixes portability, versatility, volume, and wonderful tone. Cool stuff.
