If you're brand spankin new to the bass, it might be a while before you are performing, in which case you can take your time. The most important thing is to get the best possible sound out of your bass without an amp. This involves both right- and left-hand technique, and the condition that your instrument is in.
If you're in a band, you might benefit from persuading them to rehearse at a volume where you don't need amplification. This will help you improve your playing and the band's musicianship.
