Need amp advice for my rig

Hi all,

I'm very suddenly in need of a new amp, as I've joined a swing band, and I'm going to be switching back and forth between electric and upright. Just to give you a little background on my equipment, I have a Brice active 6 string electric, and a Christopher laminated bass with an Underwood pickup.

Unfortunately, I'm on a very tight budget, so I don't have the cash to shell out for 2 different amps. What I'm hoping to find is a combo that will be usable for both. I absolutely love the Ashdown 210T Mag 300 combo for electric, but I haven't heard it on upright and have heard it may not sound fantastic for an upright. What other alternatives might there be for the under $500 range?

Gallien Krueger or SWR

I'd try to find a used GK MBE or MBS combo or a SWR Workingman's 10 0r 12.

Do the MB's sound better than the Backlines? I tried a Backline 210 and really wasn't impressed. Granted, I didn't have a lot of time to try it out, but it had a lot of hiss and sounded more hollow than other amps that I've tried. Thanks!

I used to have a Backline 110. It was awful for DB. I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks hdiddy, I thought I was just going crazy, since I'd heard a lot of praise for that line. Has anyone had any experience using an Ashdown Electric Blue 12" combo with UB, or the Eden Nemesis 12" Silver Series?

Im using the mag 300 210 combo and it sounds great..These amps dont colour the sound so you can easily reproduce the sound of your upright..I have no complaints with mine..And you cant beat the price..

Not to push you in any direction, but click on my sig and read my review of the GK Backline 600 head, which shares a preamp with the current production Backline combos. You have to dial in the flat settings as a starting point for giving the Backline series a fair trial, especially on upright.

I don't like the WM10 on EB at anything above practice volumes by myself. It might work in a little trio. The recent addition of the extention cabinet helps and you might be able to swing that for EBAY pricing.
