Need Cabinet Suggestions For Double Bass

I need some recommendations for a 2x10 or 1x12 cabinet to play my double bass through.

Thanks!

I've used the EA Wizzy 12 and the M-line (also 12"). Both are great for DB IMO. If I had to pick one it would be the M-line.

According to other folks who post in this forum, the CXL-112 and the NL-210 from EA are also good choices.

The Bergantino 12" cabs are popular w/ many DB players and doublers too.

EA for DB

I have to concur with Bolo. The EA cabinets are really great for Double Bass. I think that the Wizzy 12 or even the new Wizzy 10 are ideally suited for the instrument. Another thing to consider is how they match up with the amp that you intend to use. A lot of guys also use Bergantino cabs for DB as well. There are some "vintage" EA cabinets like the VL 108 and VL 208 that sound wonderful as well, but they are a good deal heavier, expensive, and scarce as well.

Another vote for Euphonic Audio, and the Wizzy M Line in particular.

m line

In 30 years after owning almost everythig---Wizzy M-Line. I also have the Wizzy 10 which is amazing---I use it for 75% of my upright gigs. The M-Line goes louder and is the best speaker I've ever used as far as the "envelope" and bloom of the attack.

The frontrunner sure seems to be EA, but doesn't Raezer's Edge deserve mention as a contender for great sound quality? I've been very satisfied with their Bass 10 and Bass 12 for the past six years. Does EA really produce a better sounding cab or are they merely the trend cab now? Seriously, how do the two brands compare?

Basic,

Well I've never used a Razer's Edge. I had heard that the builder of those cabinets is no longer with us. Sure hope I wrong about that one. Personally I've had Flite, Ampeg PortaBass, Bose 802's and LDS (which I'm still very fond of) my absolute favorite's are the EA VL 108 and 208 and the Wizzy 10 and 12's are getting rave reviews from folks I commune with on TalkBass. I don't think that EA was ever a "trend" cabinet since there are quite a few EB players who use Epifani, Bergantino, and Schroder cabinets. They work well for me, that's all I know.

Yes, Ric, those are all great cabs and your response will certainly be helpful to all who are looking into the category of "best cab" options. I was just struck by the fact that all respondants to the cab inquiry were EA-Wizzy acolytes. That suggested to me that EA has overtaken the marketplace, certainly with regard to word-of-mouth buzz.

And, yes: sadly Rick Raezer met his untimely demise a couple of years ago. I believe Jeff Hale Music in Michigan bought the designs from the Raezer state and is manufacturing cabs as Raezer himself did.

Perhaps those of us who favor the EA products actually made informed decisions. Imagine that.

That's a given, Doctor. I was inquiring - in good faith - as to points of comparison that led to the EA choice precisely because there are so many good options. Yeah, I get it: the short answer is, "They sound better." I was looking for a little more than that.

12 inch speaker

I love my Bergantino HT-112 and EX-112. If I need a bigger rig, it's easier to take two smaller cabinets than one large one. I also love my Euphonic Audio VL-210, but at my age(65) it's too much for me to lug up steps. Single 10 inch cabs are fine for low volume gigs, but once you push them they get distortion. A friend of mine raved about his small cabinet, but I proved to him that when he was playing a low E(41 hz) what he was really hearing was the first harmonic(82 hz). If you really want to hear how a cabinet responds, take it outside(no room reinforcement).

EA cabinet summary

Feel free to add/correct me, as my only experience with these is the wizzy10. The rest is based on my following the "buzz" here on TB for the past few months and EAs web page.

CXL12 -- uncolored, 350W, 8ohms

M line 12 -- lows and highs (ie, mid scoop?), 200 watts, 4ohms

regular 12 -- less colored than the M line

10 -- 250 watts, 4ohm, mids. perhaps the best in the lightweight category, although the epifani UL 110 is also favored amongst TBers.

How great would it be if the local music shop carried this line? None the less, it's kind of amazing that these cabs are selling largely by word of mouth. They are pretty sweet sounding cabs. I've got an M line coming my way after the NAMM show. can't wait to hear how it compares to the 10.

My favorite cab for DB is the EA Wizzy 112 (mine is pre 'M-Line'). It has a detailed midrange that projects very well and helps me hear my intonation better. Also due to the crossover-free whizzer cone there's none of the phase weirdness so many tweeter-equipped cabs have, and it has very good dispersion of all frequencies. I usually power my Wiz with an old GK 400RB head and love the sound, volume, and portability.

Haven't tried the M-Line (love to) or the Wizzy 110, but I am pretty familiar with the VL-series Euphonic Audio cabinets. I have two Bergantino HT-112s that I absolutely love for bass guitar, but I'm not crazy about them with my upright. At least with my bass and setup, they're kind of boxy and boomy, without a whole lot of midrange information going on.

Ah, I see. I thought there was the suggestion that we were taken in by hype. Let me try to offer more. One of the things that makes the EA cabs attractive is their efficiency. At 103 dB SPL @ 1 watt, 1 -meter, they require far less power than many other cabs. Remember every 3 dB is a doubling of power, every 10 dB is a factor of 10. Efficiency alone is, of course, not enough. There's the sound. I've found that the Wizzy cab, when appropriately coupled with an amp with good tone shaping circuitry (e.g., the iamp 200), can be made to get reasonably close to "my bass but bigger." I say "reasonably close" because I consider all amplification to be a compromise with which I could never be completely satisfied. Finally, there's the form factor. The EA cabs, in particular the Wizzy's, are built in resonably small and light packages. I won't say that the Wizzy is the only cab that could make me happy. I will say that I'm quite happy with mine.

Actually the M-line and the regular Wizzy don't strike me as having any kind of mid-scoop. Rather, different shades of mid- emphasis. The mids are probably (at least IMO) one of the main reasons the cabs seem to perform so well for so many people in gigging situations.

The cabs you listed all seem to work great, but there's no "mid-scoop" in any of them IMO.

And I'd probably say the M-line is less colored than the regular Wizzy.

But just my opinion, and I could be all wet.
