Night and Day differences: Eden rig versus AI

Hey all,

Up until recently, I didn't have a reason to invest in proper amplification for my upright, so I was running a K&K Bass Master Pro into my BG rig (Eden Traveler 400, 210xlt + 112xlt), and I thought it sounded pretty good at the time. Of course, I had nothing to compare it with. I thought that perhaps the Bass Master was lacking something...the individual string pickups were super bright, the piezo sandwich super boomy.

I just picked up a used AI Contra series I over the weekend, and (of course) am totally blown away by the difference. The sound is far more balanced, clear, warm, rich, etc., etc., etc. I never knew what I was missing. I'm glad that the pickup is way better than my initial impressions led me to believe.

funny!

I went from an SWR workingman12 to a Eden Traveller550 with Acme LowB1 and itīs night and day for me, too.
I really like the eq section of the Eden and the way it gives me just a little warmth - but the Acmeīs are neutral to midscoopy, perhaps thatīs the real difference.

I’ve owned a Series I Contra since 1999. But sometimes I still marvel at the fact that it really is so unique - in terms of design, appearance, and most of all sound.

From what I have read, the Series III has many advantages over the Series I like we have. I may just have to try one some day ...

But I actually talked to Rick Jones to order a Focus 2R head last Friday. I’m anxious to pair it up with my new Wizzy M-line.

To help offset the costs, I currently have my Contra and my Contra EX extension cab up for sale. But reading some of the recent posts like yours make me think about changing my mind ...

Glad you are enjoying your new old AI. It is very unique and very cool, IMO of course.
