| I think starting w/ the EQ flat makes sense. But you might not need the gain trim pots wide open. If memory serves, I had the trim pot for the Bass Max in particular turned down pretty far. I think it generates a pretty strong signal. With the trim pot all the way open, it might be too hot.
Unfortunately, it is hard to generalize. If you can, just set up a time to really tweak this stuff one knob at a time with like a laboratory mentality. Take notes if you have to. Find something like a music stand turned flat like a table that you can set the preamp on with the cover off and make adjustments w/ that little screwdriver.
Another caveat - Getting a good tonal blend between the p/u's is not always the same as getting a tone you like out of each one when solo'ed.
I know. It can be complicated. Usually it's worth it if you can afford to spend the time on it.
