Question Realist Pick Up x Fishman Full Circle

Hi there

I wanna know what do you think about this two pick ups: Realist and the Fishman Full Circle.

I heard that the Realist is the best pick up for playing with the bow. Does it really works?

I wanna a pick up that works for pizz and bow. I know it is hard to find a pick up that works good with the bow, but is there anyone who already tested those pick ups and feel any difference between then?

Rena,
The Realist works better with the bow. However the Full Circle has better definition for pizzicato. Unfortunately you can't have both in one pickup. It's a drag but it's reality.

Question

yes, that's what I heard...

but it would be better to use a Fishman FC with a pre-amp and EQ for adjusting to the bow or a Realist with a EQ for the pizz?

I think that the Full Circle sounds to much treble for the DB, with no the bass tone (for the bow, I mean).

Actually, I am a beginner double bass classical student, but I want to use the double bass with my bands too.

what would be the best?

It also depends on your bass - the Realist tends to work better on carved tops that are well-broken in, since it sits directly on the table. That's not to say that it doesn't work on a laminated bass, but if you have a newer, stiff plywood bass, the Realist might not provide as much joy.

The FC depends more on the quality of your bridge, and I find that it works well with the bow, though you might need some eq. And it also depends a lot on the strings - the pickup won't make your bowing sound "scratchy" - your strings and technique will (and the pickup will report that directly to the amp).

Too many variables to truly answer your question, but I hope that gives you some food for thought...

70% of tone is in your fingers. The other 30% is in your other fingers.

I use a Realist and I love it! And I currently use it on a laminated bass.

Rena,
I think that's a excellent choice. Full Circles aren't affected by the top construction as much since their placement isn't right up against the top. They also may last longer since on some basses Realists seem to fail much quicker.

I like the sound from my bass under the bow with the full circle. Being that the pizz sound works better for me than the Realist I always use the Full Circle. I carry realists in my gig bags as backups should something happen on a gig.
