I had a Realist on my bass for 5 minutes a couple of years ago. I A-B'd it with and without a preamp and while it wasn't bad without a preamp, it was clearly fuller and richer with one. I took it off because it seemed to partially decouple the bridge from the body. The acoustic sound of the bass wasn't as good with it under the bridge foot. As soon as I took it off, the power and sound improved noticeably.
