Welcome to TalkBass!! I just checked out your post on the 1001rb, and don't know what to tell you, I play electric only, sorry I can't help. Did you try just using the 210 or the 112 cab by themselves??

Don't take it personally - a lot of threads around here wind up with no responses.

To answer your question, there are some amps that work well with double bass, and some that don't. A lot of high-powered bass amps and cabs are voiced specifically for bass guitar, and thus push low or low-mid frequencies that wind up making a double bass sound "boomy." You may be able to locate and dial those frequencies down depending on your amp's EQ, but the 1001RB-II EQ appears to have fixed frequencies. Short of buying a new head, see if a smaller, or higher-voiced cab works.

The Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II is an exceptional 700W head. The K&K Bass Max should produce a very natural upright bass sound with the GK EQs set flat. I suggest a preamp to fine-tune/EQ between the Bass Max and the GK. I've found the Fishman Pro EQ Platinum (Bob G has them for sale) to be the best preamp for all your bass needs. I have a used older generation preamp that I'm willing to part with.

THANKS GUYS, I CONTACTED DAVE AT AVATAR AND FOUND THE PROBLEM. I SWAPPED OUT THE 12'S FOR A GK 410 SBX AND IT WORKS GREAT! HOWEVER I ALREADY BLEW OUT A SPEAKER IN THE MARK BASS AT PRACTICE LEVELS. I'VE EMAILED THEM TWICE AND I'M STILL WAITING FOR A RESPONSE I HOPE THIS ISN'T AN INDICATION...

Pretty well, generally. It's a little box that has its own electronics and its own EQ controls. They generally provide a better match between the electronics of your pickup and the electronics of your amp (there are others here who can explain the technical aspects of this).

You plug your pickup into the preamp, then plug the preamp into your amp. Generally you start adjusting the sound by setting the EQ on the amp flat, and use the EQ on the preamp to get the sound you want. Somebody mentioned the Fishman Platinum Pro preamp, and I can vouch for it. I've used it a lot and it gets a better sound than I can get without it. It also gets me a slight boost (only slight) in volume.

Thanks John, I went and tried the Fishman Platinum and it made a big difference. GC doesn't have in stock, but will next week. Thanks for the info.
