Rev Solo hum

When I plug my solo into an amp I get what sounds like a ground hum.
I don't have this problem with my ebass, just the db. I have moved the rev in and out, sanded, wedged and nothing helps. Even if the pup is out of the bridge there is a hum. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

yeah, I did. I moved it over to the bass side, as was suggested in your thread, but that didn't change anything. It has hummed since I got it.

When did you get it? In any case, I suggest you give the folks at Upton a call. I am confident they'll take care of you. I have three Rev Solos and even the early ones with cabling that would not be expected to reject hum very well, worked just fine. Again-- give 'em a call.

I haven't found the original RS or RS2 to be particullarly sensitive to picking up hum. I have found, however, that the Fishman Full Circle hums with anything less than a top-quality cable, so I'd at least give another cable a try. Keep in mind that you're dealing with very high impedance devices here. You want a cable with as close to 100% shielding as possible. Many low to medium cost cables have considerably less than 100% shielding, and this information often isn't provided by the cable manufacturer. Planet Waves is one manufacturer of good-quality cables. If a better cable doesn't help, I'd contact Upton Bass. They're very helpful.

Excellent advice-- I tacitly assumed (perhaps, improperly) that the cabling was checked first. It should not, however, require any "special" cabling. I realize, robgrow, that you were not suggesting that it does.

Great advice. I just shielded a 6 inch cable and gave that a shot, the hum was reduced drastically. Thanks a bunch!

Glad to hear that helped. What do you mean by you "shielded" a cable. Did you wrap tin foil around it?

No, not at all. The hum would probably be knocked down even further if you connected the foil to the signal ground. Many good shielded cables employ both a stranded shield and a foil wrap. I'm curious to know whether your hum problem will be eliminated by the use of a good-quality shielded cable as robgrow suggested.

I will have to admit I use tin foil extensively for shielding things on my test bench. It is a handy way to isolate shielding and grounding problems.

I had the same hum problem with RSolo (even with good shielded profi cables, including monstercables - nothing helped!!!), but NEVER had it with Underwood, which is really dead quiet in every situation.
RS´s low output and hum was the main reasons I got finally rid of it.

and the reason we completely re-did it! For every 10 "I love it" comments we would get, there was the one "I can't use it" comment...and that absolutely drove us to (almost) drink.
