Take Away Their Sticks 50% of the Time

Hey Jeff. Yeah, I noticed Ed's Chet Baker tag. Hehe!

I was listening to some old recordings of Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz recently. The drummers are playing really, really soft. I mean really supportive, probably the softest of all the instrumental voices in some of the arrangements. They played mostly I think with brushes, and I think in some cases with their hands on the kit (i.e. no sticks). The sax / acoustic guitar and vocals just carry and lead the song very nicely this way.

IME, I don't think many drummers nowadays are into that kind of approach. I dunno. It worked for Charlie and for Stan.

I think Keeter Betts was the bassist on most of the tracks on both recordings.

Everyone wants to be Elvin Jones, and no one wants to be Joe Morello ;-)

Just read it. Very true.
