| Shure mic knock-off Earlier in the year, I bought a 'Shure SM57' and packet of rubber bands for mic'ing my bass. Guess which was the fake?
This setup seemed to work pretty well until this weekend when it was plugged into a snake cable that went back 20-30m to a mixing desk. The sound person was not getting enough signal to do anything with it. Hmmm - all the other mics on stage were plugged in the same way and working fine. I quickly switched to my backup electret and preamp and went through the same connection to the desk and all worked perfectly.
When I got home and thought about it, I suspected the mic was not the genuine article, and a quick search brought up dozens of articles online about spotting fake Shure mics. I am now pretty sure I got a fake mic for the effort of saving about $10-15.
eBay (yeah, I know!) are only interested in getting notified about counterfeits if the article is still for sale, so after wading through pages of 'contact us' I have given up for now.
I have ordered another 57 through an authorised dealer. I guess I should contact the seller if he is still around and ask for my money back? Or will the mic get sold again as 'virtually brand new'? Not sure what to do from here.
Steve
