STOOPID LOUD

So I've been doing the occasional porkchop hit lately and using my Clarus in a Wizzy 12 M-Line. It's pretty cool but I was doing a hit Saturday with a live hip-hop/rap act and had to turn up enough that my speaker was making the occasional farting noises on the real low notes.

So the question should I get another M-Line or Wizzy 12? I was thinking a EA Wizzy 10 might be cool so I might use it for smaller DB hits but is it going to greatly increase my volume when I use it and the 12M?

I did a search and read a few things but I couldn't find one with this exact question.

Most of us porkchop guys will tell you to get another identical cab, myself included, to avoid possible phase cancellation/reinforcement problems. It appears your amp will do a 2ohm load, so that's the way I'd go if I were you (those cabs are 4ohms, yes?).

Yup. 4ohm. Really the amp cranks as is for most gigs but when you are doing rap/hiphop stuff the bass needs to be really big and deep. I was hoping that adding something like the wizzy 10 might do the trick only so I have more versatility in my setup. Might not help with the size of the sound though.

The Wizzy 10 isn't going to really add much bottom end to your setup. Not a huge fan of it with the Bass Guitar. I would lean towards another Wizzy 12 M Line. IME there is something special that happens when you stack 2 12's that match. It really really adds a lot of presence and low end. I will say that the Wizzy 10 is a pretty cool cab with the Double Bass if you don't need much low end extension.

If you mix cabs when you EQ one, it's not always the same desired EQ for the other. Hence, two of the same is a safe bet. That's my approach anyway.

But like that one forum member stated; "What do I know, I'm a bass player not a musician? Ask the guitar player"

I've got a Wizzy 10 and, while I can say lots of things about it, deep isn't one of them. It's very clear and kind of mid rangey. Pretty good for upright as it doesn't get too muddy. Not a very ballsy cabinet though. It wouldn't be my first choice for what you want to do.

That would be cool, and provide you with options. I use an M-line and a regular Wizzy 12 "stack" w/ both my DB and my Laklands for really loud gigs with no PA.

But as far as your original post goes, maybe the PA could do the heavy lifting?

Fingers,
Several years back I thought I'd get creative and use a pair of EA VL 108's with my Walter Woods MI-400-8 for louder gigs. My thinking went like this, since one VL 108 sounded great in smaller venues it seemed logical that two of them would get me more power and more coverage. Unfortunately, it was pretty tricky to pull of because, stacking them as a pair put two tweeters in close enough proximity to the Realist and they would how, even with the tweeter and midrange controls rolled completely off!

So, just a word of caution, borrow that second cab and try it out. I've been able to use that configuration (2X VL 108) inside on carpet or a stage, but not outside on concrete. Go figure? Conversely, I can use a VL- 208 anywhere and get plenty of volume. Others have told me that the VL 208 and the Wizzy 12 M Line are similar sounding cabinets, evidently a pair of VL 208's sounds very good, so if you follow the "matching pairs rule" it stands to reason that two Wizzy 12 M Lines would also. Just to confuse the issue more, Bob Gollihur mentioned in another thread he's prototyping a Wizzy 210.

For BG gigs I use two wizzy 10". It will give you a 2-10 cab sound. 2 wizzy M line cabs will help you achive that Dub sound you are looking for. When I kick it with hip hop or dub gig I go with a Messa Carbine and a 4-10" cab. It's just about what you need. I use a wizzy M line 12" cab for URB to.
