For those of you that double

I recently joined a pretty busy R&B band that does a wide variety of music. Straight up jazz, soul, a little rock, blues, and older"jump" blues. There are probably 30-40% of the tunes that would go well with my upright. Depending on the venue, I would use a Mesa Walkabout, or na SVT with a 610 cab. I have a Revolution Solo II pickup for my upright, but often just mic the bass. To use the big girl through the amp, and still have my P bass handy for "Respect. Crossroads" and such, what would be a good, simple way to have them both in the mix?

Sandman,
The Mesa/Revolution Solo should work well provided the input impedance is at least 1 Meg ohm. I'd get a HPF Pre Series II from Francis Deck. It's a very reasonable, small preamp that loads at 10 meg ohm, has a phase shift switch, volume control and lo cut fliter. I don't know what the input impedance of the SVT is, but it's probably 500 K ohms. That little box will solve most of the common pickup feedback problems. Using a mic on the bass FOH is the easiest way to get your sould going and it's also the simplest way provided you have a seperate monitor send for the bass or use your amp as your onstage monitor with the Rev Solo.

I would use both amps. The mesa for the Upright and the Ampeg for the Electric.
It will make your life so much easier to not have to re eq everything and adjust volume every time you switch instruments and also to have two seperate channels to send to FOH. If that is not an option I would look into a Bassbone.

+1 especially if you don't have a preamp for your upright. The second input on the Bassbone has a 3-band EQ built into it to dial in some nice tones. I have one and I use it as a DI with a signal boost for solos with my bass guitars, and I intend on using it to its full potential when I make my next purchase an upright

+1

I have separate EQ for each instrument. I use a good pre that handles the high impedance piezo and provides EQ, and an active electric bass which also handles its own EQ. This allows a "flat" setting on my amp. I use a Radial Bigshot A/B to switch.

In the likely event that you will need to be in the PA, you MUST use two channels in the PA. Here is one way:

DB Realist->ParaDI->Multicomp-->Radial BigShot A/B->Amp
Sadowsky P/J Electric Bass-->DI-->

The ParaDI is a sansamp pre with a DI. The Multicomp is an EBS compressor pedal.

I really like the Walkabout for my EUB.
