VIKTOR KRAUSS!!!

Does anybody have any insight into how Viktor Krauss gets his live and recorded sound?

He has an amazing knack for getting a natural Upright sound that still cuts through in louder bands.

There was an article on him in BP a couple-few years ago(next time I drop one I'll peruse my stack of back issues). A diggable dude, tonally.

I think he uses a Fishman BP-100 pickup. That pickup will cut through a lot although they don't have the 'purist' sound.

It's always funny how the more natural sounds get lost in the mix and the more nasally-ugly sounds will work.

I visited Viktor when he had one of his Juzeks for sale. Very nice guy. the Juzeks tend to record well - he favored the one that had more of a mid-range tone and was selling the more "scoopy" one.

I've seen Viktor play several times with Lyle Lovett. He does indeed have a ye olde Fishman BP-100 mounted on the bridge. It's a distinctive sound that works very well for him because he has letter perfect intonation and flawless technique, so with his virtuoso abilities the Fishman allows him to cut through Lyle's Large Band.

Several years ago when he toured with Lyle's Smaller band he also brought along a second bass for a featured bowed solo on a tune he wrote for Lyle. I believe that bass had a Kurmann mic endpin. That unit is no longer available. So even as good as Viktor is, ( and believe me he is amazing) he brought along another bass with a different pickup when he used the bow.

cool. very helpful.
There's a video on youtube that shows his bass with three seperate pickups. He is blending the three sounds with a Lehle Parallel. I've been thinking about getting another pickup to compliment my realist.

I used an Underwood, mixed with a Realist for a number of
years. Mixed it with a Ravenlabs blender. I think its a good
combination if your bass likes it.

I think I heard one time that at one point ,possibly before the Large Band, Viktor played a 5/8" size Framus Ply bass.
Has anyone else heard this or have any evidence to support it?
