Vintage pickups?

I'm looking at purchasing an URB which comes with a vintage "Dearmond(?)" pickup. Are these any good?
Do many players use vintage pickups?

There are several reasons this pickup is no longer in production today.
The main one being it was not great.
Even the Polytone pickup sank into oblivion, and I think it was much better than the De Armond. (don't remember the exact spelling either!)

I had a De Armond pickup when I first started playing. In this case, the acronyn P.U. was apt.
