I kind of found out by accident (after getting a rummage-sale bargain on one) that the Sennheiser MD421 sounds wonderful on DB, no matter where you put it. It's a large-diaphragm dynamic, and an old standby for high-SPL uses like drums and bass amps. The output is much lower than a condenser, so the feedback problem isn't as bad.

Interesting, Mike. How do you use yours...on a stand? Mounted on the bass? And what about that "five position bass control"? Inquiring minds and all...

I've also had good luck using an RE-20 to record my bass. I like a gut-like, punchy tone and the RE-20 gets it.

I've also used a direct from a pickup together with a mic but if you do this, always check for phase cancellation. It's amazing if you look on 2 digital files of a direct and a mic track. The mic wave will be noticably later and if it's anywhere near 180 degrees between the two, you lose a lot of sound. This can be corrected by flipping the phase on one track or nudging the file so they line up.

I'm currently using a Sennheiser MD-441 on a stand (whenever there's a PA at the gig). It's a hypercardioid with excellent off-axis rejection, and it sounds great. When there's a decent sound guy, I have no problems playing a big band gig without feedback problems.

Got it for a song, too!

I got mine for 75 cents!

Chris, I put it on a stand....it's too big and heavy to mount on a bass anywhere. I didn't experiment with the bass rolloff switch too much, as it sounded really natural on one setting. I'd tell you what that setting is but I can't remember, and the mic is on loan to a buddy at the moment.

vote a microphone

thanks for suggestions. I'm still confused, but maybe I go to try a neumann km 185.

the GK is an old standard but a non hi-fi amp.

I'm oriented to have a powered speaker. like the wizzy or shertler pub 220. what do you think?
