What Amp Do You Use?

I'm running an Eden WT400 into a Wizzy 12. I'm not happy with the Eden for upright and am looking to sell or trade it for something more suitable. So I'm wondering what everyone else is using. There's one caveat, they new head will also have to be suitable for use with electric bass (soul/classic rock) also.

Markbass LMII and EA cabs baby! I double with a Music Man Stingray. Great tone for URB and BG and super light weight. I play everything from country to rockabilly to blues and classic rock and this rig has never let me down.

Question Sound off...

I'm running a 1967 Fender Pro Reverb (SilverFace).

I tried a chip amp on my old NB-4, but the sound was fuzzy (muddy???). It just didn't sound right. This old tuber works great with my non-pushed old axe...

Just a question to help the rest of us, help you, what are you going to use the amp for??? Ya, Ok, OK, to make the bass sound off .. What type of playing are you going to do, and where, like in the basement, or on stage. At some place with a lot of back ground noise like a bowling alley, or at an amphatheater, or just someplace nice an quiet...

Where and how you will be playing has a lot to do with how big an amp you need. How much sound do you need???

Talk to us, there's lots of folks here that just love to ...

More later

I've not tried Markbass but based on all the buzz I would check one out.
AI heads are fantastic for DB but not so good for a passive slab. I like my Clarus with an active bass though.
I suppose a WW would be best, but they are expensive.

I've had both the WT-400 & WT-330; for DB(as well as BG)I much prefer the -330's tone as well as it's simplicity.

I play newgrass, hot club style swing and roots/americana on the URB. We play somme real quiet gigs and some fairly loud bars. I'd like to stay up near 400 watts due to my need for a backup amp for electric gigs as they tend to be much louder and in bigger rooms.

The Eden is a great amp, but the EQ section on it is far from intuitive. I can get a URB sound close to what I want, but I'm never really that satisfied with it. Plus I also run the soundboard in my URB band which is a lot of work and I need something with easier to EQ and make adjustments to on the fly. I prefer an old fashioned EQ with sliders.

I'm seeing AI Focus heads here in the for sale topics that
are fairly cheap. Killer for upright. For electric, run the bass
into a Sansamp, (or something like it) into the effects loop
return. Then you can have both basses in the head at the
same time.

Do you like your current rig for electric? If so, before you get something else, try a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ/DI. It is a great unit.

I use an AI Series III Focus 2R. My backup is an EA iAMP-200. I use a SansAmp BDDI in front of both of them for EB.

The Focus sounds great w/ upright. And I really like the tone shaping capabilities of the SansAmp for slab.

The Eden is my backup rig. my current electric rig is an Ampeg SVP Pro preamp into a 3000 watt QSC power amp with a SWR goliath 6-10 cab for electric gigs.
I travel small and light whenever possible on URB gigs.

Featherweight favorites (at least in this forum) are the Acoustic Image Clarus and Focus, and more recently the Markbass LM II. The Micro 300 from EA is also an option. Plenty of threads on each to search.

The latest on the Micro 300 is that it is ready for re-release if that's an appropriate term. I could be wrong, but I think it will grow in popularity in this category (hi-fi, super light, suitable for DB and EB).

My little rig is Clarus/Wizzy. Great for EUB/URB and fine for an active electric bass or with something in front of the Clarus like a SansAmp. Passive electric bass seems too dark with the Clarus.

If I don't need to play very loud, my AI Coda works great. I played a gig with a blues band last weekend- first 2 sets on acoustic, last 2 on fretless electric. Plenty of volume, great tone. I use my Fishman preamp on the (passive) BG as well as the upright, so the rig setup & teardown was a breeze. They make a head-only version of that amp, but I don't recall the name. AI is great stuff for double bass. Super light, great tone, not too expensive.

i'm playing a little mark II into a schroeder 12r. it's a nice combination, but i'll be picking up a schroeder 10+ soon also, it's all about keeping it small. i'm mostly playing small group jazz and some big band stuff.

Has anybody tried using an Ampeg B2R with URB?

I have. The preamp is not voiced right for DB and the input is the wrong impedance for a piezo. If you use a separate preamp (I've used a sansamp and a fishman platinum) and bypass the built in preamp by going in the effects return it works fine. A Really HEAVY head though.

+1

Now I'm running Markbass LM2, before that a 800rb, before that the B2R. I like either of those MUCH more than the B2R for upright.
