Looping stations

my band is trying to take a progressive step foreward (or i suppose sideways) and i for quite some time i have been wanting some kind of looping station and now i can justify buying one

unfortunately i do not know very much about which ones are superior to other and was hoping some of you guys might

are there any in particular that i should check out?

ive been re-searching them quite a bit lately, and the ones that stand out (keep in mind a 16 year olds price range, i cant shell out the big bucks for a looperlative) are the Line 6 DL4 and the Boss RC-50

has anyone here ever used either of these or know of other ones that i should check out?

Electro-Harmonix 2880.

It's not cheap, but it's not nearly in the same price range as the Looperlative or Echoplex.

I've had a DL4, RC-20 and JamMan, and the 2880 is far better than all of them.

I've got a Digitech Jamman which is very similar to the Boss RC-20. I like it, but you can only record one loop at a time. I think you'd have this problem with the Boss RC-20 aswell. Steve's the world authority on loopers so he'll be able to give a much more comprehensive answer when he comes along.

yeah, i was talking about the rc-50 though, it seems to be much more advanced that its predecesor

the 2880 also looks very good, and it isnt too expensive even with the footswitch extension

do you know if you can get an expression pedal extension aswell? and can you play all four loops at once or it it only one at a time?

The RC-50 and the 2880 seem to have pretty similar features overall.

There's no expression pedal with the 2880 - but it does have MIDI ins and outs, so you might be able to rig one that way.

You can play all four loops at once and do as many overdubs as you want on each. The only drawback there is that all four loops have to be the same length, and you can't multiply them like you can with the Echoplex.

You can, however, mix and pan each of them any way you like and dump them onto a separate mix-down track to do even more looping if you want. It's also very easy to do because of the sliders. The punch-in button is also pretty innovative - you can either undo whole overdubs or selectively erase a certain part if there's a bum note.

Another thing is, it's a tabletop unit except for the footswitch, so you don't have to lean over and squint to do all of those things like you would with the RC-50...

Best idea would be to try both and see which you like better, of course - don't buy anything like this before you try

Ah yes, sorry.

The RC-50 does look good, but the reviews on harmony-central aren't. A lot of people have complained about lag.

I haven't had a chance to try the 2280 or the RC-50, but I'd definitely be very cautious about the RC... heard way too many bad things thus far. Have a look at the archives of the loopers-delight discussion list - www.loopers-delight.com - there's been A LOT of talk about both of these units of late... That's definitely the place to go for the lowdown on this stuff...

right now the one that looks best to me is the 2880, even though it has no expression pedal it does have the sliders. and it just looks like it has an overall higher quality than the rc-50. I've checked out loopers delight a couple times but not really in depth so i'll have to go back there.

so i ended up picking up a 2880 last weekend and i have not stopped having fun. its a bit hard to kick it off at the right time though

yeah i got the footswitch too. i sometimes feel like a mad scientist or something when i have four loops with a couple overdubs each and i just mess around with the volume and tempo

I picked up a Boss RC-20xl last sunday. It seems of high quality construction, and to my surprise - it doesn't suck tone like everyone says it does. www.purevolume.com/kev - Sky High is basically as it would be performed live, and found it would be easy to use for a live performance!
