Michael Manring Show

ok, first of all, i finally got to see Michael Manring play last Friday in Austin, Texas. it was amazing. the guy isn't on another level, he's in another dimension. fantastic music, and ability...couldn't get over it.

anyways, i just had a quick question:

during the show, you mentioned how one of your pieces was inspired by a building you saw in...Spain? i think? you stated the architect's name, but i couldn't remember it. who was it?

by the way, if you remember, i was the one who taped that sign to the window at Kerbey Lane. my apologies if i freaked anyone out.

The piece to which I think you are referring is Michael's "La Sagrada Familia".

The architect is Antoni Gaudi; the building is Temple de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, yet to be completed.

Google "Gaudi" and/or the name of the cathedral itself & have fun reading about this one-of-a-kind architect and one-of-a-kind structure.

p.s. - the English word "gaudy" has it's sole origin in Gaudi's name.

p.p.s. - Michael is indeed in a class by himself, IMNSHO!!!

Edit: out of respect for all the excellent bass players whom I haven't yet seen live, I feel I should amend/clarify my above statement:

"Of all the bassists I have seen live, Michael is in a class by himself, IMNSHO!!!"

Funny, but untrue. Comes from the middle english "Gaud" which was basically flashy costume jewelry.

Good tangent - re: Merriam-Webster and your link, looks like you are absolutely right. Thanks much for the correction!

One of those things that sounds right (given Gaudi's singular style) and one assumes for years - only to find out it isn't true.

What I get for not doing all my homework...

If you've ever seen La Sagrada Familia then you'll know why Michael found it so inspiring, it is amazing!

Alan Parsons wrote a whole album for it.

yeah, funnily enough, I was really inspired when I visited La Sagrada too, but I think it was just because I was listening to The Nuge on my walkman...
