Putting it all together

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard tons of solo bass cats in the relatively short time I've been doin it myself and it seems nearly everyone has a different approach to song composition and structure. My question is : How do you put it all together?

Personally, I usually start with a beat or rhythm, then add subsequently necessary beat or rhythm after that, then melody, then just ice all over the whole thing and wrap it up with something classy.

PS-(check my sig for tunes)

i too would be very interested in hearing other solo bassists' composition processes...

composing is definitely what excites me most about solo bass, despite how difficult i find it. i don't have a set way to compose as different tunes have been composed in different ways. however, one thing i like to do is start with an idea. the idea could be a chord progression i want to try out, or a new altered tuning, or maybe a specific technique. this idea is usually the prerequisite before i begin composing.

for me the composition is all about the melodies. i guess i try to find 2-3 different parts (always the trickiest area for me) and then work on the transitions between these parts as well as the overall structure...

take care,
zander
