rhythm and melody and solo bass

I have just taken the first few steps into the world of solo bass. Very exciting, but one thing is driving me absolutely insane. I can't stop playing rhythm. Melody has been very hard for me to adapt to.

So, I have tried playing keyboard. It sounds more like I am playing the drums. (left hand = kick, right hand = snare) So, I go back to the bass and maybe find a decent melody. But that melody will morph into a walking bass line. What can I do to find my melodic voice on the bass? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI sDg,

there are a couple of recent threads that may be a good place to start - have a look at the ones on practicing/muting and soloing/creating melodies - I wrote a lot of stuff in both those threads that relates to your questions - if you've got further stuff you want clarified after reading those, feel free to ask!

cheers

Steve
