I'm really uninformed when it comes to recording devices.

I need something small that I can run my bass or my amp into and get a good sound on a tape, and maybe has a few knobs and stuff that you would find on a mixer or something.

preferably under $150...

*waits to get yelled at for stupidity*

So - if we have a few knobs that have fallen off a mixer you would be interested!!

I'm sure you could get those for less than $150

How many knobs do you want?

Particular colours?

Or am I getting too "technical" now!! ??

I remember "8 Tracks" - didn't they have cartridges - looked a bit like this :

Are you looking at laying down multiple tracks (either simaltaneously or one at a time) or just getting a decent recording?

For the former, a multitrack device would do the job - for $150 you'd probably be looking at 4 or even 2 track tape based system or something with more tracks but heavily used.

For the latter, how about Minidisk? I find mine invaluable for recording rehearsals and gigs. It's very portable and, because I'm happy with the LP4 mode quality for my current purposes, I can get about 5 hours worth on a single disk (as opposed to about 21 minutes out of a C90 cassette on my Tascam portastudio 4 track).
