| Audacity and MobilePre Problems

I have the M-Audio MobilePre that I'm trying to use with my laptop to record into Audacity. However, no matter what adjustments I make, I can't seem to get a decent recording level in mono.
When I have it set to record to 2 channels, the levels are fine. between adjusting the level on the MobilePre itself and within the driver, I can get it to just below the point of clipping. Of course, since I'm only plugged into one channel, I only record to one of the two channels, so that's no good.
When I switch it to mono (in Audacity, edit/preferences/mono), the recorded level maxes out at 0.5. I can play the bass really hard and actually see it just top out right at 0.5.
I've tried going direct into the MobilePre as well as using the DI out on my amp and that makes no difference, not that I really thought it would.
Are there any other settings that I'm missing here?
thanx
